Would Bugs Bunny be a better Secretary of Defense than Chuck Hagel?

I have been opposed to Chuck Hagel holding any public office since he voted against the surge in Iraq.  I felt at that time that he was posturing for a Presidential run and the vote did not reflect his convictions.  Now, with all of the publicity about his (maybe) confirmation as Secretary of Defense, I believe that Hagel truly thought that we were getting mired into Iraq as we did in Vietnam.  He was wrong then and wrong now.  History can debate the merits of the Iraq war.  While it appears now that we went into Iraq based on faulty intelligence, Mr. Hagel and his left leaning allies sought to deny support for the forces that were in place in Iraq.  That makes him incompetent for this post.  Disagreeing politically is one thing but acting to undermine the armed forces of this country is another.



Chuck Hagel seemed to struggle to recall his name in Thursday's Senate confirmation hearings.  Leon Panetta, who I respect, wrote it off to a long day - 8 hours.  Does anyone really think that the Secretary of Defense is going to work less than 8 hours?  Hagel's saving grace in the mind of the Obama Administration must be that he will ask for instructions before making the most trivial decisions.  Is this someone we need at Secretary of Defense?

Now, let's look at Bugs Bunny.  The guy has character.  He will always tell you what he thinks.  Hagel seemed unable to do that on Thursday.  Since Bugs is a cartoon character, the administration will be able to script him any way they want.  Actually that is probably true of Hagel too but he might end up rambling on TV at the questions like an early-onset Alzheimer patient.  Don't write to me about Alzheimer's, take a look at Hagel answering questions.  He may not have Alzheimer's but he looked like it.  Bugs has great acceptance throughout the country on the left and right; he is enormously popular.  Hagel is not.  Bugs is immune to death threats from the Iranian clergy.  Hagel is not but there is little risk since they support his candidacy.  Bugs has no opinion on the Defense budget.  Actually, neither does Chuck Hagel.

Actually, if you look at the pros and cons, Chuck Hagel is at least as well-qualified to be Secretary of Defense as Bugs Bunny.
