Aside from the fact that Wilson is a Republican and Heinrich is a Democrat, how do the two likely Senate candidates stack up?
Based purely on qualifications, Heather Wilson deserves the seat. With her, New Mexico gets an Armed Forces veteran, a foreign policy expert, a Rhodes Scholar with a PhD, and someone who has represented New Mexico for well over 10 years. Combine that with the fact that Tom Udall is more left than right argues that New Mexico needs a less liberal Senator than Martin Heinrich.
Martin Heinrich has represented Albuquerque voters since 2003. He gets an A grade from the NRA and did support legislation that would require reciprocity of concealed handgun permits across all states that issue concealed carry permits. On both points, he can be expected to represent the voters of Albuquerque. His voting record, however, is aligned with the leftmost elements of the Democratic party, proposing to bring home troops in Afghanistan, unconditionally, but voting against removing troops from Libya. He also voted in support of Obamacare and was endorsed by Mr. Obama in 2008.
